After months of hard work and perseverance, Winemaker Jaco Brand is finally able to reflect on what has been their most successful harvest season.

“Although harvest 2015 presented a few challenges, it was a great success overall. We are most excited about the fact that we managed to increase our yield to 9700 tons, up 400 tons from last year’s 9300 tons. This helps us maintain a steady supply of stock to our current international distributors, as they usually sell out before we are ready to supply the next load.

Harvest started two weeks earlier than last year due to hot climatic temperatures towards the end of January, this resulted in the grapes ripening and being picked earlier. The major challenges with which we were faced this year was the lack of tank capacity as most of the grapes were ripening at the same time. Overall, it was a cool summer; we didn’t experience many heat waves in December which created the ideal ripening conditions for the grapes.

On the 20th of January harvest officially started, the first varietal brought in was our Chardonnay from the Swartland farms; then we moved on to our Pinotage Rosé from Botrivier and the rest of the grapes were harvested towards the end of January and in February. During harvest, we experienced a 3-day heat wave, but luckily all the white grapes were already harvested by then. Once we completed harvesting all the white grapes, we had to wait one week before picking the red grapes, thus allowing more time for the natural sugar levels to increase in the red grapes. We ended off harvest by picking the Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Noir, and thankfully we managed to pick all the grapes right before a hail storm hit the town.

We are very happy to report that the quality of the wines is looking great! Our cooling system worked optimally, and we experienced no breakages. We also hired a generator to avoid any load shedding disruptions during harvest.

The cellar was filled to its maximum capacity;  we had to store some of our wine at another cellar just to get everything in!
