Masakane Daycare Centre opens its doors
The official opening of the Masakane Daycare Centre took place in Malmesbury on 24 June 2015. This was made possible through a partnership that saw Citrusdal Wines, together with Rheboksfontein, VSG Boerdery and Rooidraai (the neighbouring farm of Saamstaan), donate their Fairtrade Premiums towards building a crèche for the community.
Our Fairtrade Premium – a percentage of our local and international wine sales – is funnelled into various community development projects that aim to benefit our farm workers and surrounding community. The Masakane Daycare Centre is such a project.
After facing a fair number of challenges regarding premises availability and financial support, the centre was finally allocated land by the Swartland Municipality, who saw it as a good opportunity for educational development within the community. Finally, after a lot of hard work and dedication, the Masakane Daycare Centre is now open and fully operational. The centre caters for children between the ages of three months and six years and consists of six classrooms suitable for a total of sixty-eight children and five teachers. All those involved – including Rooidraai, who generously agreed to donate their Fairtrade Premium, despite not being one of our current suppliers – are very excited about the centre’s future.
Our brand manager, Wim Braak, aptly expresses our feelings about the project: “We are very excited to be part of this long-term Fairtrade project, as well as other short-term projects such as the provision of work and leisure gear for workers, the planning of travel excursions for them, and the installation of geysers in their homes. It gives us great pleasure to see how Fairtrade can make a difference.”
We are proud to be one of the first wine co-operatives to have received accreditation from the Fairtrade Foundation in 2003. The mobilisation of long-term Fairtrade projects is rewarding to all involved, including the business, our workers and our local and international consumers.
